ACMS Field Research Fellowship Program
The American Center for Mongolian Studies is inviting applications to conduct field research in humanities, sciences, and social sciences for at least 6 weeks in Mongolia. Fellows must be US citizens with at least a bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled or employed at a university or college. The projects will be conducted between May and October with a up to $4,000 award given with additional funding for travel. The goal of the fellowship is to assist as many researchers as possible to participate in a field research experience in Mongolia.
American Institute of Indian Studies Junior Research Fellowships
AIIS Junior Research Fellowships are available to doctoral candidates at U.S. universities in all fields of study. These grants are specifically designed to enable doctoral candidates to pursue their dissertation research in India. Junior Research Fellows establish formal affiliation with Indian universities and Indian research supervisors. Awards are available for up to 11 months. Non-U.S. citizens may apply as long as they are either graduate students or full-time faculty at colleges and universities in the United States.
American Institute of Indian Studies Language Programs
The AIIS Language Program offers nine-month academic year, summer, and semester courses at elementary to advanced levels in many languages, including several that are rarely taught outside of India. The eligibility requirements vary depending on the particular program. Academic-year program students may compete for full fellowships funded through the U.S. Department of Education; summer program applicants should seek funding from their home institutions or through the Critical Language Scholarships program (for Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu), but may also be considered for a limited number of partial scholarships from AIIS.
Blakemore Freeman Fellowships
Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one academic year of full-time, intensive language study at the advanced level in East or Southeast Asia in approved language programs. Applicants must have a well-defined career objective involving Asia in which regular use of the language is an important aspect; the potential to make a significant contribution to a field of study or area of professional or business activity in an Asian country; prior experience in the Asian country or involvement or participation in activities related to the country; and a good academic, professional, or business background appropriate to the career program. The fellowship covers tuition or tutoring fees, plus a stipend for travel, living and study expenses.
Chinese Language Fellowship
The Chinese Language Fellowship Program (CLFP) is a nationwide initiative to strengthen the next generation of American scholars focused on China. The program supports American graduate students with a fellowship of up to $50,000 so that they can devote one year to intensive Chinese language training at an institution of the fellow’s choice, generally in China or Taiwan.
Chinese Government Scholarship Programme
Established by the Ministry of Education of P.R. China provides both full scholarships and partial scholarships to international students and scholars to study or research at universities in China. All undergraduate programs for international students are instructed in Chinese. Applicants with no command of Chinese are required to take the college preparatory courses for 1-2 years before pursuing major studies. Provides full or partial tuition and a monthly stipend. Confucius Institute Scholarships
The Confucius Institute Scholarship program was established by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in order to encourage students and Chinese language teachers all over the world to study Chinese or conduct research regarding Chinese language and culture in China. Scholarships are offered for a Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL), and one academic year or one academic semester study in China. Open to non-Chinese citizens age 18-35 (MTCSOL applicants age 18-45). Language requirements apply. Provides full tuition and a monthly stipend.
D. Kim Foundation Fellowships
The D. Kim Foundation provides fellowships and grants to support graduate students and young scholars who are working in the history of science and technology in East Asia from the beginning of the 20th century, regardless of their nationality, origins, or gender. Comparative studies of East Asia and the West as well as studies in related fields (mathematics, medicine and public health) are also welcome. One postdoctoral fellowship (up to $55,000) will be awarded annually, and 1-2 fellowships (up to $25,000 each) will be awarded to Ph.D candidates who are writing their dissertations; Travel grants ($2500) are also available.
Gandhi Research Foundation Fellowship
Applications are invited by the Gandhi Research Foundation (GRF), Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India, for a Residential Research Fellowship Program. This initiative is open to scholars, activists, social workers, and public figures for the purpose of conducting intensive applied research (for 3-6 months, extendable) to underscore the relevance of Gandhian solutions for tackling contemporary problems and crises. The fellows will focus on one, or at the most two, of the thrust areas, which are: rural regeneration, economic sustainability, skill development, employment creation and the promotion of health and nutrition, or alternatively, on a Gandhian topic of contemporary relevance. Free board & lodging are provided along with a monthly stipend (Rs. 15000 – 30000) depending on the candidate’s qualifications.
INYA Short-Term Fellowship Program for US Graduate Students
This fellowship funds research that will contribute to studies on Myanmar in any aspect of its wide linguistic, cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity and to better understand the country’s past or present political and socio-economic situation. Applicants must be U.S. graduate students currently enrolled in a graduate program. Fellows are awarded between $2,400-$4,400 for a maximum of 4 months, a travel stipend of up to $1,700 and a desk at the Inya Institute in Yangon and access to the institute’s library and amenities.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship Program provides recent PhD recipients and ABDs with opportunities to conduct research in Japan under the leadership of a host researcher. Fellows are encouraged to advance their own research and at the same time closely collaborate with young Japanese researchers and contribute to Japanese research communities. Applications are welcome from all social science and humanities disciplines and need not be explicitly related to the study of Japan. Projects propose a single, continuous stay in Japan from 1-12 months (short-term) or 1-2 years (long-term).
Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships
There are seven types of Japanese government-sponsored scholarships available under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program for study in Japan: those for research students, teacher training students, undergraduate university students, Japanese studies students, college of technology students, special training students and Young Leaders Program (YLP) students. Japanese language requirements apply. Scholarship recipients are recruited and initially screened by an Japanese embassy (or consulate general, depending on the country).
JSPS Summer Program
The program is offered to young pre- and postdoctoral researchers from the US, the UK, France, Germany and Canada. Held over a 2-month period in the summer, the program provides the participants with an orientation in Japanese language and culture and an opportunity to do cooperative research at a Japanese university or research institute. The program includes International travel (round-trip airfare), a maintenance allowance (534,000 yen) and accommodation. Deadlines vary by country and applicants must be nominated by the official authority in their county – see website.
Luce/ACLS Predissertation-Summer Travel Grants
Predissertation travel grants provide funding for graduate students to explore venues, make preliminary research arrangements, and gain advice from Chinese scholars that prepares them for research in China. Provides $5,000 for a preliminary visit of 3-4 month to China to prepare for beginning basic research for the dissertation. Graduate students who have already begun research in China are not eligible. An applicant must be enrolled in a PhD program at a university in the United States or Canada. A working knowledge of Chinese is required.
PhD Bridging Program
The Centre for Human Rights, Multiculturalism, and Migration (CHRM2) is offering facilities for current PhD candidates and early career researchers with a PhD degree who want to complete field research in Indonesia. Fellowships are between 2 weeks and 4 weeks long. Eligible candidates must be researchers in human rights, law, politics, education, gender, sociology, and anthropology. Each fellow will receive 4,000,000 IDR, free housing, and a private office.
Pierre and Patricia Bikai Fellowship
The Pierre & Patricia Bikai Fellowship will be awarded to assist one graduate student for two months or two students for one month in conducting archaeological research in Jordan. The fellowship will provide room and board at ACOR and a stipend of $600 per month. The fellowship may be combined with another ACOR fellowship that will assist with travel, or the applicant may find travel funds from other sources. This fellowship is not for field work support, but to allow the awardee to continue study or research at ACOR after the field project has concluded and residency at the ACOR center is required. Open to enrolled graduate students of any nationality except Jordanian citizens.
The Academic Research Institute in Iraq Fellowship – U.S. Citizens
The Academic Research Institute in Iraq (TARII) is inviting post-doctoral and advanced pre-doctoral researchers to conduct research focused on subjects in historical academic fields from ancient Mesopotamia to modern Iraq. Potential projects include: research in archives in Europe, Turkey, or India, interviews with Iraqis living abroad, remote sensing of ancient Iraqi landscapes, collaboration between a U.S. scholar and an Iraqi living in Iraq. Financial awards are up to $7,000 and based on merit by a review panel consisting of scholars from member universities.
UNESCO/People’s Republic of China (The Great Wall) Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme
The Government of the People’s Republic of China has placed at the disposal of UNESCO for the academic year 2016-2017, under the co-sponsorship of UNESCO, seventy-five (75) fellowships for advanced studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These fellowships are for the benefit of developing Member States in Africa, Asia–Pacific, Latin America, Europe and North America and Arab regions. The fellowships, tenable at a selected number of Chinese universities, are for a duration of one year. These fellowships are in most cases to be conducted in English.

American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships of up to $23,000 to individuals to pursue research, study or creative arts projects in one or more Scandinavian countries for up to one year. Awards are made in all fields. Applicants must have a well-defined research, study or creative arts project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related study or research.
BAEF Study and Research Fellowships in Belgium
The Belgian American Educational Foundation (B.A.E.F.) encourages applications for fellowships for advanced study or research during one academic year at a Belgian University or institution of higher learning. The B.A.E.F. will award up to ten fellowships as outright non-renewable grants carrying a stipend of $27,000 for Master’s or Ph.D. students and $32,000 for Post-doctoral Fellows. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applicants must also either be registered in a graduate program towards a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the U.S., plan to register in a graduate program (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Belgium, or currently hold a Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent degree.
Boren Fellowships
Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support both language study and (optional) research and internships in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, with a focus on studying less commonly taught languages. Boren Fellows apply their advanced degrees to work in the federal government for at least 1 year after graduation, and receive exclusive opportunities and preferential consideration for government careers.
Chateaubriand Fellowship – Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS)
The Chateaubriand Fellowship – Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS) provides PhD candidates currently enrolled at a U.S. university the opportunity to conduct research in France in any discipline of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The fellowship lasts for 4-8 months and provides travel, health insurance and a monthly stipend of 1,500 Euros. Candidates do not have to be U.S. citizens, but they must be enrolled in an American university.
Chateaubriand Fellowship – Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)
The Chateaubriand Fellowship – Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) provides funding for PhD candidates currently enrolled in a U.S. university to conduct research in France at a French university, a school of engineering, a national laboratory or a private enterprise, with a link to a Doctoral School. The fellowship is for 4-10 months, provides travel, health insurance and a monthly stipend of 1,400 Euros. Non-U.S. nationals are eligible to apply for a Chateaubriand Fellowship as long as they are currently enrolled in an American university.
CIMI Doctoral Fellowships
CIMI offers a 3-year support grant for up to 6 students starting a PhD in one of the teams related to CIMI. The fellowships are open to French and foreign students and awarded on the basis of the quality of the academic records. The research areas should be developed within the activities at the Institut de Mathématiques de Toulouse (IMT) and the Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT). PhD subjects with interactions between mathematics and computer science will be closely examined.
DAAD Research Grant
Research Grants are awarded to highly qualified candidates who have completed either: a Master’s degree or Diploma, a Bachelor’s degree (by the time they begin their grant-supported research), or a Ph.D. (postdoctoral candidates). Applications for long-term grants (7-10 months) are accepted annually in November. Short-term grants (1-6 months) accept applications in November and May.
DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships
DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships in the fields of Space, Aeronautics, Energy and Transportation Research. A new program implemented by the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) and DAAD. DLR is Germany’s national research center for aeronautics and space. This special program is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as senior scientists. DLR-DAAD Fellowships offer outstanding scientists and researchers the opportunity to conduct special research at the institutes of the DLR in Germany. Check ‘Current Offers’ for opportunities.
EDUFI Fellowships
The EDUFI Fellowships programme is open to young Doctoral level students and researchers from all countries and from all academic fields. The primary target group in the EDUFI Fellowship programme are such Doctoral level students who will be doing their Doctorate (or Double Doctorate) at a Finnish university. The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 1,500 Euros. The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. The programme is open for candidates of all foreign nationalities.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program for Study/Research
A U.S. Student Fulbright Grant allows for individually designed study/research projects that will take place during one academic year (9-12 months) in a country outside the U.S. Applicants design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. The study/research awards are available in approximately 140 countries. For recent BA/BS graduates, graduate and doctoral students, and young professionals including artists, musicians, writers, journalists, and those in law, business, and other professional fields. Undergraduate and graduate students must apply through their institution; professionals and former students can apply through their alma mater or At Large.
Geography and Spatial Sciences Program Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Awards (GSS-DDRI)
The Geography and Spatial Sciences (GSS) Program sponsors research on the geographic distributions and interactions of human, physical, and biotic systems on Earth. Investigators are encouraged to propose plans for research about the nature, causes, and consequences of human activity and natural environmental processes across a range of scales. GSS provides support to improve the conduct of doctoral dissertation projects undertaken by doctoral students enrolled in U.S. universities. GSS gives 30-40 awards each year. Awards may not exceed $16,000. An advisor or another faculty member must serve as the principal investigator (PI) of the proposal.
Lehmann-Haupt International Doctoral Programme
The transdisciplinary “Lehmann-Haupt International Doctoral Programme” is a joint project between Ilia State University Tbilisi (ISU) and Georg-August-University of Göttingen (UGOE) which gives 12 PhD students from various scientific fields (including social sciences) the opportunity to pursue their doctoral projects within a structured Cotutelle-based framework and obtain a PhD degree by each of the two universities (double degree). Students will spend time at both universities and must be proficient in English. Full funding is included for the duration of the PhD program including additional funding for research related expenses.
NORAM Scholarship for Americans to Study in Norway
NORAM scholarships provide financial support for Americans to study or conduct research in areas of mutual importance to Norway and the United States to strengthen the ties of friendship between the two countries. Every year, NORAM offers up to 10 scholarships ranging from $1,500 – $5,000 to American students, based on merit and need. The size of the individual grants depends on the research subject, purpose and the intended length of stay in Norway. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and have completed a Bachelor’s degree before the application deadline.
Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)
RISE stands for Research Internships in Science and Engineering. RISE Professional offers summer research internships in Germany to Master’s and Ph.D. students from North America at companies and non-university research institutions with strong relations to industry. The program is open for students in the field of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering or a closely related field. All participants receive a scholarship from DAAD and an additional stipend from their host company/institution to help cover living expenses. Funding is possible for a period of three months in summer or fall. German language requirements vary according to the internship placement.
Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program
The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSMFP) provides support to developing country nationals who are PhD candidates from developing countries and working in academic and research institutions in a developing country who seek 6-10 months of funding to conduct PhD research in a World Bank member country other than their home country or country of residence. Research grants cover residence costs up to $25,000 USD for a 5 to 10 month period in a renowned university or research center. Fellows are expected to advance their research work mainly by using the facilities and resources provided by the host institution and by interacting with peers. Candidates must be under 35 years of age.
Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarship
Global grant scholarships fund international coursework or research at a graduate level or its equivalent for a term of one to four academic years. Global grants also may support vocational training teams, which are groups of professionals traveling abroad to either learn more about their profession or teach locals. The field of study must align with one or more of the following areas of focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy and economic and community development. Spanish National Cancer Research Centre Summer Training Fellowship
The Spanish National Cancer Research Centre Summer Training Fellowship offers university students the opportunity to gain experience in a competitive laboratory in Madrid, Spain. Fellows will be placed within a research unit to work on various oncological research projects and will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Spanish culture. The summer program, lasting from June to early August, is for upper-level graduate biomedicine or life science students of any country; there is no citizenship requirement. A stipend is provided.
Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship
The Structural Engineering Travel Fellowship is a $20,000 award that aims to foster an appreciation of the aesthetic potential in the structural design of buildings and bridges by enabling a gifted graduate to experience works of architecture and engineering first hand. The Foundation hopes that the Fellow will in turn influence the practice and teaching of structural engineering in the future. Applicants must be graduating with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or Ph.D. in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering from a U.S. school. U.S. citizenship is not required.
Study Abroad Fellowships for UK Residents
Offering maintenance and research expenses to allow applicants to spend a period of 12-24 months on advanced study or research at a centre of learning in any overseas country (excluding the USA). Non-UK residents are not eligible. The Studentships comprise a basic annual maintenance allowance of £18,000, a partner allowance of £6,000 and return air fare. Applicants must have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years at the time of application, hold a degree from a UK institution, and either be a student at the time of application or have been registered as a student within the last 8 years.
The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research
